The Weekly kicked off its series premiere with a scathing exposé of T.M. Landry College Prep. One might be surprised considering the school’s illustrious reputation but there’s a dark secret hiding behind the doors of T.M Landry.

Before the New York Times/ The Weekly conducted their investigation of T.M. Landry College Prep, much of the publicity surrounding the school merely applauded the students who’d been accepted to ivy league schools like Yale, Harvard, and MIT. Hardly anything negative was ever said about the school or its’ founders: Tracey and Michael Landry.

Mr. and Mrs. Landry have been leading the charge for several years, encouraging families from all around Louisiana to enroll their children in the school. They’ve promoted the school as a means for the black community to access ivy league universities but it’s a huge farce.

Despite hosting extravagant announcement parties and creating promotional videos of T.M. Landry students receiving their acceptance letters, the truth behind the unaccredited school is much darker than anyone could have ever predicted.

According to The Weekly’s journalists, Michael and Tracey Landry have been forging student transcripts to get them accepted into colleges. The students themselves weren’t in on the scheme but that’s because Mr. and Mrs. Landry did so without anyone’s knowledge. Neither the students or parents knew anything was amiss until well after they’d left the school and enrolled in college. Some students didn’t learn of the falsified transcripts until they were moving into their dorms.

The fallout of these lies has forced some of T.M. Landry’s former students to return home. Others are thriving in their college lives but not everyone is so lucky.

On top of the scandalous falsified transcripts, The Weekly also exposed the unseen abuse going on behind T.M. Landry College Prep’s closed doors. The show’s investigative journalists gathered testimonies from former students and their families wherein they learned that Michael Landry physically and psychologically abused a majority of the school’s students.

Erica Green and Katie Brenner, journalists who researched the controversy, didn’t go into the investigation under the assumption that ongoing abuse was happening — they actually learned all of that from the students and Michael Landry himself. Mr. Landry inadvertently led the journalists investigating him to a separate incident of a student who’d accused T.M. Landry of abuse after they’d learned of one such case from a different person.

Upon further investigations, they found that multiple students reported abuse from T.M. Landry’s staff but state officials didn’t act because the school is unaccredited and does not accept funding from the government. With it being privately owned, an official inquiry could not be done. This has given Michael and Tracey Landry free reign to run the school as they please — without fear of repercussion for physically disciplining students.

After concluding their report, The Weekly succeeded in getting the students of T.M. Landry’s story to the public. It hasn’t garnered nationwide support yet but enough was said for the FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) to open an inquiry into the prep school. More still needs to be done but this is the first step towards having T.M. Landry and its staff held accountable for the damage it’s done.
