In the following episode of FX’s The Weekly, the series’ investigative journalists will set their sights on New York City’s taxicab Medallions. Check out a preview of “The Myth of the Medallion” below.

After hitting the ground running with a tremendous premiere, The Weekly is ramping up the intensity even more in its’ following episode entitled “The Myth of the Medallion”. The focus of episode two deals with the value of New York City’s taxicab Medallion. It was once appraised at a worth of over a million dollars but has gradually declined since the rise of app-based ridesharing services like Uber and Lyft.

As for the episode itself, Brian Rosenthal is the lead investigator who’s conducting a report on the Medallion’s current value. He and other like-minded journalists will interview several taxi drivers who’ve witnessed the rise and fall of New York City’s Medallion. One of the most prominent of the episode’s subjects is Mohammed Hossain.

In the promo for episode two, Hossain can be seen giving an emotional testimonial where he acknowledges that several of his fellow drivers killed themselves over the debt incurred from purchasing a medallion. The same fate has befallen many people and the trend doesn’t seem to be declining.

The series’ investigators will also interview other drivers to gain a wider perspective on the situation. They can’t just ask one or two people and develop a hypothesis off of that data — they need more subjects. Fortunately, there’s no shortage of taxi drivers who can speak on the matter.

What’s most concerning is how drivers like Hossain will be able to cope in a world where self —driving cars and ridesharing services thrive. They’ll never see an increase in customers while Uber and Lyft dominate the market so taxi drivers who’ve purchased a medallion are in quite the dilemma.

Since they bought in before the Medallion lost value, they’re required to pay back that original amount — not what the badge is priced at today. Because of that, taxi drivers are finding themselves in insurmountable debt and can only drive their vehicles to pay it off. But as we noted before, they have very little chance of doing so in the current market.

A reasonable person looking at the dilemma might question why New York City’s taxi drivers don’t switch to working for Uber or Lyft but that alternative doesn’t work for everyone, especially when ridesharing services take a commission from fares produced by the driver. Then when you account for the crippling debt incurred from purchasing a Medallion in its’ heyday, switching professions isn’t a viable alternative.

Hopefully, The Weekly’s report urges New York City’s politicians to remedy the situation. The certificates are awarded by the city so officials possess the power needed to wave drivers’ debts on the Medallion. The local government can’t afford to clear drivers of all debt but the least they can do is waive the remaining balance on their drivers’ Medallions.
