It’s not often that a true classic film makes its way onto Netflix. Usually, you can catch a popular movie from the 1980s, like The Breakfast Club or Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, on the platform every once in a while, but films predating the 1980s are few and far between on Netflix. Thankfully, the streaming giant welcomes a real American staple that’s actually worth revisiting in 2019 and stars two of the most iconic movie stars of all time, Elizabeth Taylor and Paul Newman. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof ranks as one of June’s best new release movies.

Based on the Tennessee Williams play of the same name, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof stars Paul Newman and Elizabeth Taylor as married couple Brick and Maggie Pollitt. When Brick breaks his leg while trying to relive his high school sports glory days, he continues to soothe his wounds with alcohol. Brick and Maggie visit Brick’s family, and the pressures to live up to his brother’s growing family weighs heavily on their marriage, which has already felt a divide due to Brick’s guilt over the suicide of his best friend Skipper. Because of the times, the film dances around the heart of the matter.

Upon release, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof was a box office success, taking the top spot for five consecutive weeks and returning to No. 1 for three more weeks after Damn Yankees took over for a brief reign. The film was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Director, but walked away without any wins. Still, the story has lived on in stage revivals and additional adaptations, making it all the stranger that Cat on a Hot Tin Roof hasn’t gotten a modern remake. Don’t miss the original classic on Netflix beginning this month.
