As the calendar inches closer and closer to the 4th of July, we’ll naturally want to watch summer movies as well as movies that are patriotic. This June, a ton of summer-worthy popcorn movies are coming to Netflix, but there’s also a patriotic throwback arriving this month that will head straight to the top of the watch lists of all war movie buffs. Oliver Stone’s Platoon is one of this month’s new releases that you won’t want to miss.

The first in Oliver Stone’s trilogy of Vietnam War films that also includes Born on the Fourth of July and Heaven & Earth, Platoon centers on Chris Taylor (Charlie Sheen) as he leaves college to enlist in Vietnam in 1967. When Chris arrives for combat, his idealist perspective fades as he’s confronted with the realities of war, which includes fighting within his unit between sergeants. The added pressures of war lead the soldiers to turn on each other as they must also fight against their shared enemy.

Platoon comes from director Oliver Stone, who also helmed such popular films as Wall Street, Any Given Sunday, Alexander, and Savages. Upon release, the film earned critical acclaim, leading to its 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and eight Academy Award nominations, of which it won Best Picture, Best Director, Best Film Editing, and Best Sound. Platoon was also a box office hit, bringing in a worldwide gross of $138.5 million against a $6 million budget. Clearly, you don’t want to skip this well-loved classic when it begins streaming on the first of the month.
