These days, more and more major stars are popping up in Netflix original series and movies. Whether it’s Sandra Bullock in Bird Box or Renée Zellweger in limited series What/If, high-caliber stars are bringing their talents directly to our watch lists each month. When it comes to this month, another Oscar winner stars in would could be the next conversation starter as Hilary Swank headlines sci-fi-thriller I Am Mother, one of June’s best new releases.

I Am Mother centers on a teenage girl (Clara Rugaard) who has been underground by a robot called Mother. She’s the first of a new generation to be raised by Mother, which is designed to repopulate the Earth following the eventual extinction of humankind. However, the girl’s connection with Mother becomes threatened when a blood-drenched woman (Hilary Swank) arrives and mixes up everything the girl had been taught about the outside world. Soon, the woman explores Mother’s nature and learns the truth about the robot’s real mission.

I Am Mother was first screened at the Adelaide Film Festival in October 2018 before making its first official premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2019. Netflix acquired the rights to the film following the festival, where the film’s director and young star received advanced praise. With the star power of Hilary Swank (who will soon star in the Netflix original series Away) and Rose Byrne, I Am Mother has the potential to be the next big hit in a long string of Netflix movies striking a chord with the internet. Be sure to add it to your watch list when it begins streaming on the first Friday in June.
