Each year, there’s film or two (or more) that receives an outpouring of love from fans online, but it lacks the power to blaze through awards season and beat the bigger titles. 20th Century Women was one such film back in 2016, getting lost amid the buzzier films making a play for Oscar gold. But even though these kinds of films remain lost, sometimes they come back around for their chance to shine. This June, 20th Century Women is among the best new releases on Netflix.

From Thumbsucker and Beginners writer-director Mike Mills, 20th Century Women takes place in Santa Barbara, California in 1979 and centers on single mother Dorthea Fields (Annette Bening). Dorthea raises her son Jamie (Lucas Jade Zumann) during a pivotal moment of change in society and calls on the help of two younger women, artist Abbie (Greta Gerwig) and fellow teen Julie (Elle Fanning) to shape Jamie. It’s sure to make you laugh and cry.

20th Century Women first made its premiere at the New York Film Festival in October 2016 after being acquired by A24. The film later screened at AFI Fest in November before receiving a limited theatrical release in December. The films holds an 89% on Rotten Tomatoes and was nominated for the Best Original Screenplay Academy Award, as well as two Golden Globes for the film and for Annette Bening’s performance. Don’t miss your chance to catch one of 2016’s most underrated films.
