They don’t make them like this anymore, folks. Teen comedies that are simple, dumb, and fun just aren’t hitting the big screen the same way that they used to. What a Girl Wants arrived during an interesting time for pop culture, as romantic comedies were still a bankable box office vehicle for young stars. Amanda Bynes headlined the ’00s classic (you know it is) at the height of her What I Like About You fame, and it’s without a doubt the #tbt you need to check out.

Based on William Douglas-Home’s 1955 play titled The Reluctant Debutante, What a Girl Wants updates the story, complete with a rename that’s a nod to a hit Christina Aguilera song. Bynes stars as Daphne Reynolds, an American teenager who decides to travel across the pond to find her father. There’s one catch: She’s never met her father, and he happens to Lord Henry Dashwood (Colin Firth). A member of the British upper class, Lord Henry’s run for political office hits a snag when Daphne arrives to stir the pot.

What a Girl Wants received mostly negative reception from critics, holding a 35% on Rotten Tomatoes, but that number should be taken with a grain of salt. The film fared a little better with moviegoers, ranking at No. 2 in its opening weekend and bringing in a worldwide gross of over $50, effectively doubling its $25 million budget. More than anything, What a Girl Wants will remind a whole generation of the awesome entertainment we were given and the hilarious comedic talents of Amanda Bynes. Take a walk down memory lane this June on Netflix.
