When a film doesn’t connect with the mainstream and fails to attract the kind of acclaim and commercial success that runs a movie into a blockbuster, there’s always hope that it will grow in time. The Space Between Us, which missed the mark critically and commercially, arrives on Netflix this June for a second chance. Starring Sex Education’s Asa Butterfiled and The Haunting of Hill House’s Carla Gugino, this one’s undoubtedly one of June’s hottest new releases.

The Space Between Us stars Asa Butterfield as Gardner Elliott, who’s the first human to be born on Mars. He begins an online relationship with teenager Tulsa (Britt Robertson) from Colorado and  meets her when he makes his first trip to Earth. However, complications come to light when scientists realize that Earth’s atmosphere isn’t hospitable for Gardner’s organs. He goes on the run with Tulsa, forcing him to explore the mystery of his past and the prospects of his future.

Upon release, The Space Between Us tanked at the box office, bringing in only $14.8 million against its $30 million budget. The film also suffered from negative reviews from critics, though moviegoers seemed to enjoy the ride with an A- CinemaScore. Of course, the magic of movies is in the eye of the beholder, and even so-called box office bombs can age better than their unlucky releases would lead you to believe. Give The Space Between Us a chance when it debuts for streaming on Netflix on the first of the month.
