You never would have thought that a drama film starring Channing Tatum as a stripper in Tampa would not only be a huge hit but also pretty good. But in 2012, the actor proved everyone wrong with Magic Mike, a once in a lifetime kind of movie that aligns the stars for a moment in pop culture history. Of course, it’s a fun summer movie, but it’s also shockingly earnest in its exploration of its characters. Whatever brings you to Magic Mike, it’s one of the month’s best new releases.

Loosely based on Channing Tatum’s experiences as a stripper in Tampa, Florida, Magic Mike follows its title character, Mike Lane, as he tries to reconcile his goals with his current line of work. By day, Mike works in construction and by night, he’s one of the leading talents at an all-male revue. Mike dreams of designing furniture for a living, but his kindness in helping mentor a 19-year-old newbie stripper (Alex Pettyfer) complicates both his present and future.

Upon release, Magic Mike proved to be both a critical and commercial hit, grabbing a solid 80% on Rotten Tomatoes and earning a whopping $167.2 million worldwide against its $7 million budget. The film spawned a less-successful sequel, 2015’s Magic Mike XXL, and was later adapted into a stage musical. Seven years ago, Magic Mike was a summer sleeper hit, and it arrives on Netflix for streaming just in time to celebrate its seventh anniversary. If you’re throwing a girls night with your best friends, consider your headlining attraction sorted.
