By and large, June’s crop of new additions might be one of Netflix’s most eclectic bunches of content in a while. There’s a ’50s classic, a trio of recent hit animated films, an early ’00s rom-com, a ’90s cult film, a handful of diverse original movies, and a 1976 Academy Award winner. Never has the phrase “there’s something for everyone” been truer, and that can’t be reiterated enough about these new releases. If you’re in the mood for a ’70s satire film, check out Network.

Peter Finch stars in Network as veteran news anchorman Howard Beale, who learns that he will be pushed out of his position at the network. He threatens to shoot himself on live television but later opts for a rant on live television that results in a boost in ratings for the network, UBS. Howard’s outburst and its strangely positive reaction from the public open up the doors for producer Diana Christensen (Faye Dunaway) to take developing crazy new series to the extreme.

Network comes from directed Sidney Lumet, who also helmed such films as Murder on the Orient Express and Dog Day Afternoon. Lumet directed the film to four Academy Award wins, including Best Actor for Peter Finch, Best Actress for Faye Dunaway, Best Supporting Actress for Beatrice Straight, and Best Original Screenplay. The film was an instant hit with critics and audiences and has remained heralded as one of the best films of all time. Be sure not to miss Network when it arrives for instant streaming on Netflix at the top of June.
