Dark Betty

Dark Betty has been a running storyline since season 1. It all started when Betty and Veronica realized the football players had a notebook rating the girls they’ve been with and when Chuck, who Veronica went out with, lied about what they did on their date. This leads the two girls to bring Chuck to Ethel’s house.

Betty comes out in lacy lingerie and a black wig which is our first sign something is up. She then announces that she slipped a muscle relaxer into Chuck’s drink to work as a “truth serum.” The girls then handcuff him while Veronica videotapes it all.

Betty demands an apology for what he did, mistakes him for Jason Blossom, pours maple syrup on him, and even pushes his head under the water of the Jacuzzi. It, rightly, freaks Veronica out, but Betty barely notices the change in herself.

As the show goes one, so does the Dark Betty storyline. She threatens to kill Cheryl and does a striptease in front of Jughead and the Serpents at the Whyte Wyrm.

Dark Betty is one of the stranger storylines on the show and seems to come out of nowhere most of the time. And now it’s been revealed that Betty has the “serial killer” gene. It seems like Dark Betty may be here to stay.

Cheryl burns down her own house

Cheryl has had a tough life. Her twin brother was murdered by her own father, her mother is a tyrant, and she was assaulted by Nick St. Clair. After learning of her father’s guilt and then his death, Cheryl decides to start anew. And that means burning everything so she can rise up from the ashes.

So, she sets Thornhill, the mansion she has lived in with her parents, ablaze. It might be an overreaction (maybe?), but for Cheryl, it oddly makes complete sense. Nevertheless, no matter how much it fits her character, it is definitely one of the crazier moments on the show.

Betty’s “brother”

Riverdale loves to introduce a new character, but not many of them were as strange or mysterious as Betty’s pseudo-half-brother, Chic. We first meet him in season 2. Betty and her mother, Alice, are led to believe he is Alice’s eldest child who she gave up for adoption.

But after helping Betty and Alice hide a body (they killed a guy!) and being overall shady and threatening, it turns out he is not her half-brother at all. He took on the identity of his roommate, Charles Smith. Charles was actually the one Alice gave up for adoption. He was killed by Chic before he ever met the Coopers. Or, was he?

This storyline brought a whole lot of drama and introduced some of the most out-there episodes. It also raises the question of if the writers will expand other character’s family trees. Who knows, next season Betty and Veronica could turn out to be related.
