Stranger Things 3: The Mind Flayer is coming back to Hawkins

The Mind Flayer will return to Hawkins, and likely in Stranger Things 3, according to the Stranger Things creators, Matt and Ross Duffer, also known as the Duffer Brothers.

We have bad news for those hoping the Mind Flayer was going to sit out the summer of 1985 in Hawkins. It looks like the Mind Flayer will be back in Stranger Things 3. 

According to an Entertainment Weekly report, the Matt and Ross Duffer, aka the Duffer Brothers and creators of Stranger Things, teased the return of the Mind Flayer to Hawkins in the new season, which premieres on Netflix on July 4, 2019.

According to Matt Duffer, the Mind Flayer is still in the Upside Down, biding its time to find a way to attack Eleven and those who took him down, via EW:

"“It will find another way into Hawkins.… It’s just a matter of time.”"

While it seems clear the Mind Flayer isn’t done with Will, Eleven and the rest of Hawkins yet, it might not be the biggest obstacle facing the heroes of Hawkins in Stranger Things 3. As it stands, growing up and dealing with the rigors of puberty and being teens in a small town.

Here’s what Matt told EW about the new season:

"“The season takes place during the last summer before high school. The kids are growing up, and that transition is going to be messy and awkward and painful. Are they able to grow up without growing apart?”"

If these young heroes can team up to defeat a demogorgon and Mind Flayer, there’s more than enough reason to believe their bonds will hold together in the long run. The day-to-day might be a little tricky, though, and there will be cracks within the party. If we learned anything from the season 3 trailer, that’s definitely it.

Just because there are cracks within the party, it doesn’t mean our heroes will be all on their own. Will seems like the most vulnerable. We see him crying (in the rain?) while looking at pictures of his friends, but I don’t think he’ll be totally alone. Max and Lucas have each other, while Max and Eleven also look to have become good friends. Mike and Eleven are obviously still together.

The Entertainment Weekly report also teased that we’ll get some more Dustin-Steve hangouts in the new season, and that should be reassuring for fans of the series. These two characters were brights spots of the second season, and there’s definitely potential for this relationship to grow. It’s clear they both need each other.
