ISTANBUL, TURKEY – MARCH 23: The Netflix App logo is seen on a television screen on March 23, 2018 in Istanbul, Turkey. The Government of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan passed a new law on March 22 extending the reach of the country’s radio and TV censor to the internet. The new law will allow RTUK, the states media watchdog, to monitor online broadcasts and block content of social media sites and streaming services including Netflix and YouTube. Turkey already bans many websites including Wikipedia, which has been blocked for more than a year. The move came a day after private media company Dogan Media Company announced it would sell to pro-government conglomerate Demiroren Holding AS. The Dogan news group was the only remaining news outlet not to be under government control, the sale, which includes assets in CNN Turk and Hurriyet Newspaper completes the governments control of the Turkish media. Shadow and Bone

Shadow and Bone is Leigh Bardugo’s first trilogy of the Grishaverse. In this world, Ravka, a giant country, finds themselves trapped between wars on both its North and South borders with Fjerda and Shu Han. Ravka, unlike the other countries, has people with powers, known as Grisha, and the country’s forces are led by the Darkling.

Shadow and Bone follows the story of Alina Starkov, a young woman in the Ravkan military. As it turns out, she has powers, extraordinary abilities, that she has been suppressing for years. After the Darkling discovers her power, he plans to use her as Ravka’s secret weapon in their various wars.

There is a lot to like about this world. It’s not reflective in the same time period as Game of Thrones, but there are many similarities, especially with the politics, magic, betrayal and high stakes. This show has the potential to be a huge hit at Netflix, and I expect it to be.

There are even more stories set in the Grishaverse after the trilogy, including the Six of Crows duology and King of Scars, the first book of the Nikolai duology.

As a huge fan of Bardugo and the Grishaverse, I’m really hoping Netflix goes all-in on the Grishaverse rather than just focusing on the Shadow and Bone trilogy. There is so much potential with this world, and I think, over time, it could become the next TV Westeros.
