When people inevitably open the forum and ask their trusted confidantes for a new series to binge-watch, the heavy hitters always mate cut. The most popular series on the platform at the time are the first to be suggested, but why not poke through the archives and binge-watch a series that used to be popular, especially if you have never had the pleasure of watching it? For a long-commitment comedy binge, Weeds is just what the dealer, er, doctor ordered.

Weeds comes from Orange Is the New Black creator Jenji Kohan and tells a story that’s just as complicated. Mary-Louise Parker stars as widowed mother of two Nancy Botwin, who begins to sell marijuana as a means to provide for her family. Soon, Nancy’s role as a dealer leads Nancy and her family to become more and more involved in illegal activity, and the series changes it setting to bend to the narratives sharp turns.

Over the course of its eight seasons, Weeds received 20 Emmy Award nominations, including Outstanding Comedy Series in 2009, and 10 Golden Globe Awards, winning one for Mary-Louise Parker’s performance in 2005. The show was credited with helping transform Showtime and its original content, which would later result in Dexter, Californication, and Nurse Jackie among others and all of which can also available to stream on Netflix. It’s never too soon to travel back in time to watch a celebrated series that just doesn’t get talked about anymore.
