Right before the rise of “Peak TV” and all of its prestige adornments, the USA Network was still mainlining the television equivalent of a beach read. You know, the kind of series that airs during the summer and asks very little of the viewer. It’s light, fun, but still packs a dramatic punch without taking itself too seriously. Those kinds of shows are mostly extinct, but luckily, we can still marvel over one of the best, Royal Pains, on Netflix.

Royal Pains centers on New York emergency room doctor Hank Lawson (Mark Feurerstein), who finds himself in a need of a new job after being wrongly accused of causing a patient’s death. He moves to the Hamptons and strikes out on his own as a concierge doctor to the area’s rich and famous residents. While Hank toes the line between helping others and helping himself, he ultimately also provides healthcare to those who can’t afford it.

The series ran for eight seasons and 104 episodes on the USA Network, making it one of the network’s longest-running series. Although it began as one of the highest-rated shows on cable, the ratings declined in its later seasons. However, Royal Pains stood up in quality to USA’s other procedural fare, such as Monk, Psych, White Collar, In Plain Sight, Burn Notice, and Covert Affairs. None of USA’s other past favorites are available on Netflix, but you can dip into a long-commitment binge-watch of Royal Pains.
