If there are two shows on Netflix that are the hands-down most watched titles each month, they would have to be Friends and The Office. These are the titles that binge-watchers always want quick access, that inspire outrage when they’re rumored to be removed, and that will never not be the answer to “What should we watch?” Diehard fans could watch all nine seasons and 201 episodes of The Office back-to-back and still go in for another round. Clearly, they’re onto something.

Based on the British series of the same name, The Office traces the zany day-to-day activities of the Dunder Mifflin Paper Company staff in Scranton, Pennsylvania. The comedy simulates the style of a documentary, as its characters break the fourth wall and look directly into the camera. The Office popularized this format and helped change the shape of workplace sitcoms. While mockumentaries have been in limited stock since its end, the series’ impact has been felt in series such as NBC’s Superstore and Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

Steve Carell leads The Office’s incredible ensemble cast as the company’s boss Michael Scott, a role that earned him six consecutive Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. The Office won Outstanding Comedy Series in 2006, its first year of eligibility, but it was later much more popular within its loyal fanbase than it was with awards or ratings. Much like Friends, sitcoms like The Office are few and far between. It’s not just any comedy series that enjoys a second life on streaming, but you’ll want to clock in for this nine-season sensation.
