When it comes to supernatural series with a significant episode commitment on Netflix, a dedicated binge-watcher’s options are rather limited. You can hope from series to series between the titles with a lower episode count, or you could go all in on a series like The Vampire Diaries, which capitalized on the vampire craze of the late 2000s and turned it into a whole movement.

Based on the young adult book series of the same name, The Vampire Diaries centers on the fictional town of Mystic Falls, Virginia, and follows Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) as she falls in love with a vampire. Soon, she’s caught in between brothers Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and her world expands in supernatural ways she could have never anticipated. The series ran for 171 episodes horror-fantasy fun and was at one time The CW’s most-watched show.

But that’s no surprise given how feverishly fans followed the show and its ships. The success of The Vampire Diaries helped launch two spin-offs, the five-season hit The Originals and the current off-shoot Legacies. Both series are also available to stream on Netflix as an added bonus of diving into The Vampire Diaries and reliving the glory days of the vampire revival. For a long-term binge commitment, it doesn’t get much better than the genre camp of a CW classic.
