Before we had This Is Us to make us cry week in and week out, NBC boasted another long-running family drama called Parenthood. But unlike This Is Us, Parenthood was much more underrated, both literally and figuratively. The series didn’t boast astronomical ratings and wasn’t a massive awards season magnet, and for shame. Parenthood was one of the best and most cathartic depictions of a dysfunctional American family we’ve seen to date.

Based on the 1989 Ron Howard film of the same name, Parenthood follows the extensive Braverman family as they live within each other’s orbit in Berkeley, California. Four siblings — Adam (Peter Krause), Sarah (Lauren Graham), Crosby (Dax Shepard), and Julia (Erika Christensen) — balance their own professional and personal lives with the daunting task of parenting. Not to mention, they must all navigate with each other, their spouses, and their parents.

Parenthood received one Emmy Award nomination for Jason Ritter’s guest role and one Golden Globe nomination for Monica Potter’s tour de force performance in the fourth season. In reality, each main cast member should have been nominated for some major award at some point or another and the series should have been one of the most talked about TV shows of its time. But there aren’t any mysterious throughlines or multiple timelines or twists and turns. Just a family learning to coexist in their own shared space and issues for 103 amazing episodes.
