On the latest episode of Marvel’s Cloak And Dagger, a videogame called “Duel Of D’Spayre” was introduced. In it, an 18-bit version of Tyrone and Tandy fight off waves of criminals, followed by a boss battle. The question is: Will a real videogame be released?

In Season 2, Episode 8 of Marvel’s Cloak And Dagger, Tyrone Johnson (Aubrey Joseph) and Tandy (Olivia Holt) Bowen are transported into an 18-bit videogame, but this isn’t just any game. The “Duel Of D’Spayre” arcade game turns out to be a reflection of the conflicts that Tandy and Ty have been facing on the streets of New Orleans and at the Viking Hotel.

What the game consists of are basic missions where Tandy using her Light Daggers to kill waves of henchmen while Tyrone uses his teleporting ability to launch surprise attacks—attacks similar to the X-Men’s Nightcrawler. They venture through multiple levels of baddies, leading up to the boss, but they can’t seem to locate him. It’s not for a lack of trying, Cloak and Dagger just can’t unlock the last door. Tandy eventually gives up and exits the game room to discuss alternative solutions with Baron Samedi, the man running the show.

The reason that Duel Of D’Spayre, in particular, has piqued our interest is that fans on social media are asking for an actual videogame. No one is suggesting a console type game be developed but an 18-bit arcade version seems doable. And based on what we witnessed in “Two Player”, the producers of Marvel’s Cloak And Dagger already have an arcade cabinet made.

Assuming the coin-operated machine shown was a fully functional game, the basic framework for an 18-bit game could be fashioned into a downloadable piece of content. Marvel and Freeform don’t exactly have a line of Cloak And Dagger videogames in development but a single release over mobile platforms might just work.

In any case, fans clamoring for the 18-bit Duel Of D’Spayre should be reason enough for Marvel to roll out a full game. They wouldn’t have to devote many resources to the project since a thorough concept is already fleshed out and a beat ’em up style arcade game isn’t too difficult to manufacture—even with the most basic of computers.

The point is Marvel and Freeform would be wise to expand on the Cloak And Dagger brand with this possible tie-in. Who knows, Marvel might even have a concept worth developing into a whole line of arcade games. Their console games haven’t been received all that well but going old school could change things.
