3. Star

When it was canceled: May 10, 2019

Number of seasons aired: 3

What it’s about: Star Davis is a teenage orphan. When she finds out her younger sister, Simone, is in a foster home with abusive parents, Star leaves her own foster care to save Simone. While on the road, Star meets Alexandra Crane, a singer/songwriter who lives in her father’s shadow. Star and Alex form a singing group, move to Atlanta, and seek refuge in a woman who knew Star and Simone’s mother. In fact, this woman, Carlotta, had promised to look after the sisters after their mother’s death and takes the girls in, persuading all to work to make ends meet.

This is a story of dreams, of sacrifices, and of love. It is based in the world of Empire, so there are the odd crossovers there.

Will Netflix save Star after FOX's cancellation?. light. Related Story

Why it should be saved: This was the surprising cancellation for me. I honestly through Star would be renewed for a fourth season and was disappointed that it wasn’t. This was one of FOX’s best dramas of the season.

There’s most definitely room for this show on Netflix. It’s one of the most diverse and progressive shows on TV right now and there’s a need for more of this. Netflix has offered a home for other progressive shows (and okay, some of them have been canceled but not all!) and there’s space for another to be added.

It does feel like Star‘s cancellation was for a bigger reason — the ending of Empire after six seasons next year. But why it’s set in the same universe, there’s no need to continually have characters show up. Just look at how Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is set in the Riverdale universe and manages without crossovers.
