The Office is Netflix’s biggest shows, and it’s probably leaving Netflix for NBCUniversal’s upcoming streaming service in 2021.

The Office is the most popular show on Netflix, according to NBC, but it might not be on the streaming service much longer.

The network shared the news during a presentation NBC’s upfronts in New York City, according to a report from Variety.

During their upfront presentations, executives from NBCUniversal also hinted that one of their biggest shows might be coming home for the start of NBCUniversal’s upcoming, ad-supported streaming service, according to a report from Deadline.

NBCUniversal’s new streaming service will launch in 2020, and it will be free, according to the report.

It makes sense why NBCUniversal would try to remove The Office from Netflix and build their streaming platform around the series. It’s a bold move using commercials when literally everyone is trying to avoid them. It could be a big swing-and-miss.

The Office leaving Netflix is just a sign of a larger problem facing Netflix. Studios and distributors are trying to take a piece of the streaming service pie and to do that, they have to take their shows from Netflix and start their own streaming service. It might be a good idea, but they are turning down millions from Netflix to make it happen. Licensed content is a huge part of Netflix, and if they can’t keep licensed content, it may hurt the streaming network.

Even if The Office does leave Netflix, it won’t be until at least 2021. Netflix confirmed as much in a recent tweet and for what’s probably the 100th time.

There have been rumors The Office was leaving Netflix for the last several years. Luckily, there was no truth in those rumors. Unfortunately, this news is more than a rumor.

You still have two years to watch the show on the streaming service, even if The Office does end up leaving Netflix in 2021. There’s still a chance The Office will stay on Netflix. Clearly, the streaming network pays NBCUniversal a premium price for the series, or they could if that’s what it took to keep the series. Will NBCUniversal turn down that kind of money to host the series on their new streaming platform? That remains to be seen.

What will happen if/when The Office leaves Netflix? According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, subscribers might cancel if the show leaves Netflix. The report cited a recent study that showed evidence 14 percent of Netflix subscribers would cancel if the show left Netflix.

I don’t think that means people would really go through with it and cancel their subscription. It does, however, show how many people are interested in this show. If that many people care about it, Netflix would do well to keep it, even at a great cost.

If you’re thinking about canceling Netflix over The Office leaving the streaming service, remember, you can buy all nine seasons of the show for $50 and keep Netflix for all its great content.
