The Game of Thrones showrunners, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, will take over the next Star Wars movie after Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker.

Disney confirmed the Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss will helm the next Star Wars movie after Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker, according to a report from io9 – Gizmodo.

Disney’s Bob Iger confirmed the news during a MoffetNathanson Media & Communications presentation, according to the report.

Benioff and Weiss are two of the most decorated showrunners in the industry right now after finishing up eight seasons of Game of Thrones at HBO, and now, they’ll start working on the project for Disney.

According to the report, the Benioff and Weiss Star Wars movie will be released in theaters in 2022, three years after The Rise of Skywalker. We know nothing about the plot or story of this new film. Disney is waiting three years to plan for the next wave of Star Wars in the future, and it’s probably a good move.

While some may not be happy with Benioff and Weiss for the end of Game of Thrones, these two creators are two of the best in the business at taking an established world and bringing it to life on screen.

The untitled Star Wars film will be available to stream on Disney Plus, assuming Disney sticks with the plan and releases all their new Star Wars movies on the platform after The Rise of Skywalker.

It’s likely The Rise of Skywalker and the other Star Wars movies would have been released on Netflix had Disney not pulled out of their agreement with Netflix this year. The Rise of Skywalker, most definitely, would have been, but the contract would have expired after 2020. Netflix has the money to continue a deal with Disney had the House of Mouse wanted the partnership to continue.

Instead, Disney is launching their own streaming service, Disney Plus, on Nov. 12, and all the Star Wars movies will be available to stream. There are also several Star Wars shows in the works at Disney Plus, including The Mandalorian and more! Disney Plus costs $7 per month or $69.99 per year.

We’ll let you know more about those projects when we find out more information. Stay tuned for more news about Star Wars and Disney Plus.
