2. Dumplin’

With the success Netflix has had making adaptations of popular novels, it is no wonder they are looking to make over 50 book-to-film adaptations. One of their most recent successes is Dumplin’.

Based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Julie Murphy, Dumplin’ follow Willowdean Dickson (Will), a teen obsessed with Dolly Parton and who is raised primarily by her Aunt Lucy. But Aunt Lucy dies before her final year of high school, so Willowdean has to rely on her beauty queen-obsessed mother, Rosie, her friends, and herself to get through this difficult time.

Dumplin’ stars Danielle Macdonald, Jennifer Aniston, Odeya Rush, Maddie Baillio, Bex Taylor-Klaus, Luke Benward, Georgie Flores, Dove Cameron, Harold Perrineau, and Kathy Najimy.

After getting suspended from school and fighting with her mother, Will finds her Aunt’s old application to try out for the Miss Teen Bluebonnet Pageant and decides to enter in protest against her mother.

If you need a rom-com that is uplifting and powerful, please check out Dumplin’ if you haven’t already. It’s just as good as the book which doesn’t happen too often.
