But when she returns to Aldovia, Amber soon finds that it is nothing like what she experienced before. Richard, as king, has next to no time for her and due to royal protocol, Amber has almost no control over the planning of her own wedding, including what she’s going to wear.

Richard is struggling to figure out why the country is hemorrhaging money and dealing with unhappy constituents. To help, his mother brings in a family friend, Lord Leopold to help with an aid effort. But he is not the only old friend brought back to the palace. Simon is allowed to come back as well as long as he doesn’t plan any schemes.

Amber and Richard’s relationship begins to fail as they have little time for each other and fight when they are together. The final straw is when Mrs. Averill, without asking, takes down some of her blog posts because of how they portray the royal family and then demands that Amber take off her mother’s locket in the royal portrait the couple take. She is frustrated with royal life completely and questions whether she wants to go through with the wedding at all.

Luckily, an investigation into the money issues of Aldovia soon catches her interest and with the help of Simon and her friends, they find out that Lord Leopold has been embezzling funds. But before she can bring it to anyone’s attention, Mrs. Averill shows the couple pictures of Amber at a bar where she was investigating. Richard refuses to defend her and she storms out. But with a little help from Emily, the two talk and reconcile.

At the royal Christmas celebration, Queen Helena finally gives Amber permission to plan the wedding however she wants and Amber reveals all she knows about Lord Leopold who is thrown into the dungeon. After all the drama, Richard and Amber finally wed.
