Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt interactive movie in the works at Netflix

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is coming back with a special interactive movie/finale at Netflix. The movie will be released in 2020.

It’s not the end of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt after all, according to a report from Deadline. Tina Fey and Robert Carlock are making a special interactive movie at Netflix to cap off the four-season series.

According to the report, the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt movie will be released on Netflix in 2020. The full cast with Ellie Kemper, Tituss Burgess, Carol Kane and Jane Krakowski will be returning for the special.

As far as I know, this is the first comedy interactive event. We’ve seen the choose-your-own-path work with dramas and thrillers, but I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a comedy take this path.

Netflix announced the news at their FYSee event with the Kimmy Schmidt cast in New York City. Netflix is actively campaigning for their shows to be considered for Emmys, and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is always one of the shows that’s talked about when Emmy voting starts.

For Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt fans, this is obviously great news. We thought this series was done after the final season was added to Netflix in January 2019. There were rumors and a few reports that a special movie finale would be the way this show officially signs off. We hadn’t heard anything about the movie since the final season was added to Netflix at the beginning of the year, so this is very surprising.

I’m excited to see how Fey and Carlock make this interactive movie. We saw how the interactive feature can be used successfully with Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, and I think there’s a lot of potential for an interactive comedy. Kimmy and Titus, especially, always have major decisions to make, and picking the path their characters take through the special finale is going to be cool. With it being the finale, ultimately, viewers will choose how the series ends, as well.

This a great way for a quirky show like Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt to end. I’m also interested to see how fans respond to the news. I think the show did a great job at wrapping up all the loose ends and leaving fans with a good finale. They have a chance to undo some of that if this movie goes sideways. I don’t think that’ll happen, but it’s always possible if ideas become a bit stretched.
