The series finale of Freeform’s Shadowhunters is just around the corner, and after the cliffhanger on Monday’s episode, fans are eager to see just where the story will end. Keep reading for everything we’ve learned so far about the Shadowhunters Series Finale.

Warning! Spoilers for the latest episodes of Shadowhunters follow. Read on at your own discretion.

Despite its bittersweet nature, Shadowhunters fans have a lot to look forward to in the extended series finale approaching. After all, there isn’t a better send-off for the show other than a big wedding to bring everyone together. But before the celebrations can start, first they’ll have to rescue one of the grooms.

Last Monday’s episode, “City of Glass,” was the intended season three finale for the show, so there are plenty of raised stakes throughout the episode. One of the biggest plots we see resolved is Dark Clary and the removal of the “twinning” rune she shares with Jonathan.

After kidnapping the Seelie Queen in episode nineteen, Jonathan (Luke Baines) and Clary (Kat McNamara) intend to ransom her freedom for the Morning Star Sword. The plan works but not without running into some major problems; Jace (Dominic Sherwood), Alec (Matthew Daddario), and Isabelle (Emeraude Toubia) are able to slip through to the Seelie realm with some help from Meliorn.

Unfortunately for Jonathan, Isabelle has managed to recreate Glorious—the only thing able to sever the bond Clary shares with him. Clary takes the Morning Star Sword to fight Izzy, and then Jace and Alec manage to subdue Jonathan. Jace stabs Clary’s rune and destroys the twinning rune and Glorious in the process. What they don’t realize is that the rune has been putting a damper on Jonathan’s powers. Once it’s destroyed he’s able to overpower Alec and use his new wings to escape the Seelie Realm.

The other major storyline that we see resolved before the finale is the Malec breakup. While Magnus (Harry Shum Jr.) decided to keep his memories of Alec in last week’s episode, he’s still heartbroken and only barely tolerating his father after getting his magic back. To cheer Magnus up, Asmodeus suggests he take back his apartment from Lorenzo. Since the two of them are much more powerful and high ranking than Lorenzo—taking back the loft is no problem—especially since Asmodeus is starting to egg Magnus on in using the darker parts of his magic. But with Magnus still in the dark about Asmodeus’ deal with Alec the already tentative “trust” between them is even more strained.

With so much tension in Magnus’ relationship with his father, it’s that much easier for Maryse to save the day for Malec fans. She tells Magnus that Alec was going to propose, and Magnus connects the dots between when he got his magic back and when Alec broke up with him. He confronts Asmodeus about this, and it doesn’t go well. Asmodeus wants Magnus to use his full powers to rule Edom by his side, but Magnus tells him it’s his worst nightmare and then banishes Asmodeus once more.

In Alicante, Jonathan has unleashed the full force of Edom into the Shadowhunters’ home using the Morning Star sword. With the demon towers down and hundreds of Edomi appearing from a rift in the sky. It seems hopeless to defeat them, especially when Jonathan destroys the sword. Thankfully Magnus makes his grand entrance just in time to save the day. He tells Alec that he knows about the deal, and thankfully all is well between them again. So well, in fact, that Magnus proposes to Alec. Though it’s a romantic and tender moment, it can’t last. The only person with enough power to close the rift is Magnus, but in sealing it, he’ll have to remain in Edom.

With the stakes sufficiently raised, the series finale has a lot of ground to cover. Thanks to multiple sneak peeks, we know that Alec’s top priority is finding Magnus in the first half. The first clip teases Maryse telling Alec that Magnus can never leave Edom or the rift will open again. Alec, however, is not hearing any of it. He plans to find a way to get Magnus back by any means necessary—that may include working with Lorenzo. The second sneak peek depicts Alec waking up to discover Lorenzo is still in the apartment after Asmodeus turned him into a lizard.

Another sneak peek that’s presumably from the first half of the finale involves Clary and Jace, who are also concerned about Magnus, as well as their relationship. Clary worries that she won’t be able to come back to herself after what she did with Jonathan. Luckily, Jace assures her she will, and he’ll be there for her.

While things appear to be turning up for the Shadowhunters’ crew, it leaves open the question as to what Jonathan will be up to in the finale. The final battle from the books sees him raise Endarkened Shadowhunters to destroy the remaining Nephilim.

With a big battle coming up, and the episode titled “Alliance,” it’s a sure bet that the Alliance rune featured in City of Glass will factor heavily into it. From the extended trailer, we see Luke (Isaiah Mustafa) covered in runes that would almost certainly kill a werewolf. Since he can’t become a Shadowhunter again, the Alliance rune is the most obvious option for him. Even though Clary creates the rune in the books to help defeat Valentine, it’s great to see it in the show, in some form.

Most important of all, Alec is clearly driven to rescue Magnus in the first half of the finale. The good news is that it seems like he succeeds since one of the sneak-peeks show Malec in wedding planning mode. There’s also a scene of Alec asking Jace to be his suggenes (again). Though we know a Malec wedding is definitely happening in the second half of the series finale, there is little else we know about the episode.

In addition to all the sneak-peeks, the auction from last year spoiled some major plot points so there’s not much the fans don’t already know about the finale. However, with no screeners for the episode being released, there will hopefully be some surprises left to see.

It’s almost been a year since the news of the cancellation hit and fans launched a massive #SaveShadowhunters campaign that’s still active today. With Monday’s series finale likely being the last time we’ll see this version of the Shadow World, we hope it does justice to these great characters and their passionate fans.
