For fans of horror movies, there’s never a bad time for a good scare. Christmas, the dead of spring, in the middle of summer… There’s no need to wait until the Halloween season to have a horror movie marathon. Luckily, Netflix subscribes to that same mentality and offers a few solid chillers each month. This May, Insidious arrives to the platform to stream some screams out of first-time viewers and long-time fans of the franchise.

When Josh (Patrick Wilson) and Renai Lambert (Rose Byrne) move into a new home with their family (there’s always a creepy new house, isn’t there?), their son Dalton (Ty Simpkins) ventures into the attic but strangely falls into a coma the day after. Following his treatment, Josh and Reanai begin to notice paranormal activity in the house they suspect is haunted and fear that their son has been possessed by ghosts from another dimension. While the first film in the franchise, Insidious is chronologically the third story-wise.

Insidious comes from director James Wan, who also helmed such filmed as Saw, The Conjuring, and last year’s hit Aquaman. The film was a box office smash, earning $97 million against a budget of $1.5 million, and also garnered mixed critical praise with a 66% Rotten Tomatoes rating. The success of the film resulted in the sequel Insidious: Chapter 2 and the prequels Insidious: Chapter 3 and Insidious: The Last Key. A fifth entry in the franchise is said to be arriving in 2021, but ahead of that long wait, check out the original that started it all when it streams on Netflix this month.
