If you follow pop culture at all, then you remember the 2016 Best Picture scandal that sent jaws directly to the floor. The wrong film was mistakenly honored with the Oscars’ highest honor, and it was one of those moments you truly had to see to believe. But that’s not all Moonlight should be known for. It’s also the first film with an all-black cast and the first LGBTQ+ film to win Best Picture. That’s an accomplishment to be proud of, especially since this movie will mean so much to so many people. Finally, Moonlight comes Netflix this month, but you already know its one of the best.

Based on the unpublished semi-autobiographical play In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue by Tarell Alvin McCraney, Moonlight is a coming of age story about Chiron Harris (Trevante Rhodes, Ashton Sanders, Alex Hibbert) throughout three life-changing chapters of his life. As Chiron goes through childhood, adolescence, and adulthood dealing with issues with his home life and pressures from his community, he also explores his identity and sexuality and the difficulties he faces.

Moonlight comes from director Barry Jenkins, who also directed last year’s Academy Award winner If Beale Street Could Talk. The film received eight nominations at the Academy Awards and was at the center of the Best Picture winner snafu. Ultimately, Moonlight won three Oscars, including the top prize (despite the initial mix-up with La La Land). Its success is very important and its impact will be felt for years to come. Don’t miss this beautiful story when it begins streaming on Netflix on May 21.
