Earlier this year, Netflix released a haunting documentary series about Ted Bundy, and to kick off summer, the streaming giant premieres the highly anticipated biographical crime thriller about the notorious killer. Ever since the film was announced in 2017 and when the first footage was released earlier this year, moviegoers have been abuzz about Zac Efron’s portrayal of Ted Bundy in Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Vile and Evil. Finally, one of May’s best new movies is here.

Based on the memoir The Phantom Prince: My Life with Ted Bundy by Bundy’s former girlfriend Elizabeth Kloepfer, Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Vile and Evil stars Zac Efron as Ted Bundy. The film chronicles Bundy’s crimes from the viewpoint of his longtime girlfriend Elizabeth (Lily Collins). For years, Elizabeth didn’t believe the truth about Ted Bundy, and even through the trials, she stands by his side. Extremely Wicked tells their story with a performance from Efron that’s already earning praise.

Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Vile and Evil comes from director Joe Berlinger, who also created, wrote, and directed Netflix’s successful documentary series Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes. The film made its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2019, and Netflix quickly scooped up the distribution rights for $9 million. Much has been made online about the film, but it currently holds a 63% on Rotten Tomatoes. Check out the chilling movie when it premieres worldwide on Netflix on the first Friday of May.
