Sometimes when it seems like everything is out of control, the one thing that you can do is to throw yourself into something that gives you control. Rachel Lears, director of Netflix’s latest documentary, started work on Knock Down the House the day after the 2016 election, in hopes of following female candidates who were representing their communities. The film captures voices that have the potential to change history, and it’s one of May’s best original premieres.

Knock Down the House centers on four women who start grassroots campaigns as insurgent candidates to run against incumbents in Congress. These women are a Bronx bartender, a coal miner’s daughter, a grieving mother, and a registered nurse, and they were a force to be reckoned with during the 2018 midterm elections. Of course, one of their races ended up becoming one of the greatest and most shocking political upsets in American history.

Knock Down the House made its first premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2019 before being acquired for worldwide distribution rights by Netflix for $10 million. Originally, director Rachel Lears raised over $28,000 on Kickstarter to even make the film. The film was also screened at the True/False Festival, the Athena Film Festival, and the South by Southwest Film Festival ahead of making its global bow on Netflix. Be sure not to miss this inspiring documentary when it begins streaming on the first of the month.
