It’s pretty rare the majority of the top 10 best new movies release of the month are Netflix originals. More often than not, the buzziest acquired titles take the top spots because they are long-awaited classics or the movies everyone loves to rewatch. But in May, all of the best movies are the new original movies because they are each so different and have something to say. First up is See You Yesterday, a sci-fi adventure from producer Spike Lee that covers a lot of bases, including tactful social commentary from the perspective of teenagers.

Based on the short film of the same name, See You Yesterday centers on teenaged best friends and science prodigies C.J. (Eden Duncan-Smith) and Sebastian (Dante Crichlow) as they work hard on a backpack with the power to invoke time travel, their newest invention. After C.J.’s older brother dies in an encounter with police officers, the pair take matters in their own hands and test out their invention to save C.J.’s brother. It’s a science fiction film with an urgent message about family, cultural divisions, and the natural desire to rewrite the past.

See You Yesterday comes from director Stefon Bristol in his directorial debut. Bristol worked closely with Spike Lee, who’s a producer on the film, on last year’s Best Picture nominee BlacKkKlansman.
