Sometimes biopics or films based on well-known public figures feature casting that’s so good it’s scary. You wouldn’t think that Michelle Williams, who comes off more reserved and timid than you’d expect from Marilyn Monroe, wouldn’t fill her shoes. But in My Week with Marilyn, she embodies the voice, mannerisms, and the whole essence of the beloved Hollywood star to an absolute T. This month, the Academy Award-nominated film is one of Netflix’s best new releases.

Based on the books The Prince, The Showgirl and Me and My Week with Marilyn by Colin Clark, My Week with Marilyn stars Michelle William as the iconic movie star Marilyn Monroe in 1956 as she films The Prince and the Showgirl. While on location in England, Monroe also honeymoons with her husband Arthur Miller (Dougray Scott) and forges a bond with production assistant Colin Clark (Eddie Redmayne). As the pressures of stardom wear on Marilyn, Colin offers her a chance to breakaway from the spotlight.

Upon release, My Week with Marilyn earned mostly positive marks from critics, culminating in an 83% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film earned a $35 million worldwide box office gross, which is a respectable figure for an independent film. Williams landed an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress (and won the Golden Globe), while Kenneth Branagh was nominated for Best Supporting Actor.
