Netflix viewers know this by now, but there are certain movies that are added and removed and added and removed throughout the year. The Scream series is no stranger to this vicious circle, but this month, it swings in our favor as the original returns to the platform for streaming. No matter how often it’s removed and re-added, Scream will always rank as one of the best new releases coming to Netflix because this franchise is still that good.

Neve Campbell stars in Scream as Sidney Prescott, who’s still mourning the death of her mother one year later. When a masked killer stalks, terrorizes, and kills high school students, the media descends on the small town, and Sidney soon begins to realize she’s the killer’s target. The story, which uses black comedy to satirize the common clichés of the horror genre, takes several twists and turns until the final shocking showdown between Sidney and the killer.

Scream’s successful release in 1996 helped revive the horror genre in the 1990s and spurred a wave of similar slasher films throughout the rest of the decade. The film was a hit with critics and made $173 million worldwide, spawning three sequels and the 2015 MTV anthology series. Scream 4 and both seasons of the television series can be currently be streamed on Netflix, though different films in the franchise are always added at random intervals. Don’t miss the original classic’s comeback when it returns to your watch list at the top of May.
