There are some performers who are simply the best part of anything they’re in. They have the power to elevate a film or show that might land a little flat and turn it into something that you just can’t turn away from because their on-screen presence is so magnetic. You’ve probably thought of someone in your head, but one such performer is Jennifer Lawrence, a tried-and-true movie star. She more than elevates the 2015 dramedy Joy, which arrives this month to your watch list as one of the top new releases.

Based on the true story of inventor and businesswoman Joy Mangano, Joy stars Jennifer Lawrence as the title character, a struggling working mother in a dysfunctional family of four generations. When Joy conceives the idea of a self-wringing mop, she embarks on an uphill battle to create a business dynasty and change her family’s life. However, on the road to success, Joy faces betrayal and the brutal realities of business and family, though Joy relies on her imaginative self to manage the messes a Miracle Mop couldn’t clean up.

Joy comes from director David O. Russell, who also directed Jennifer Lawrence in American Hustle and her Academy Award-winning role in Silver Linings Playbook. Lawrence snagged an Oscar nomination for Best Actress for her role in Joy, though the film received mixed reception and was a moderate success at the box office, bringing in just over $101 million worldwide. The film is required viewing for fans of J. Law, and you can catch it on Netflix beginning May 24.
