Netflix cancels their original zombie series Santa Clarita Diet. There will be no season 4 for flesh hungry fans.

Sad news as the official industry trade site, Deadline, posted news that Santa Clarita Diet won’t be back for another season. Rumors of it being cancelled have been going around the internet for a few weeks and its turns out those rumors were accurate as we now have official word.

Fans of the show are heartbroken. It’s hard to say why Netflix may have cancelled the show. It has been receiving great reviews from critics, I even wrote why I thought it was the best zombie series 2 weeks ago. This last season managed to score 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is a huge accomplishment but seems not even that could save the show.

On Twitter fans are distraught over hearing no more Sheila and Joel. Just search for #SantaClaritaDiet if you want some company as we grieve this sad news. I personally loved the show and found the relationships and characters real and engaging. It is always hard to fathom why a beloved series can still get cancelled. One wonders if Netflix is overwhelmed with projects.

We have seen some incredible shows coming out of Netflix and each year it seems that they acquire more titles. While I have loved seeing all these new shows pop up on the streaming site, I would hate for it to be at the expense of these shows we have already gotten attached to.

Victor Fresco, who created the series and Tracy Katsky, one of the executive producers, released this statement as reported by Variety:

"Like our audience, we were all-in on Sheila and Joel. Their relationship, in the face of incredible adversity, was inspiring to write and to watch. Mostly, they were funny, which in a comedy is important. Working with Drew and Tim, along with the immensely talented Liv and Skyler, was a joy and a once in a lifetime experience. Netflix took at chance on this odd show and for that we will always be grateful. They were supportive, ever positive, and appreciative of our work. Until about noon today. Still, they were just one phone call away from being a perfect studio. Not bad. Everything ends. This was a thing. And so it ended. We’ll miss it but are proud of the work we did and will always appreciate the love and enthusiasm we felt from our audience. It if was up to them, Sheila and Joel would continue for another 10,000 years."

I, for one, am glad that Netflix took the chance and that we got three incredible seasons, but I’ll be spending my weekend crying into my skull cup and re-watching all the episodes as I’m not ready to say goodbye to Sheila, Joel, Abby and Eric.

Seasons 1-3 of the Netflix series are available on Netflix to watch now.
