Canceled: Friends from College

Number of seasons: 2

What it’s about: Ethan, Sam, Lisa, Max, Nick, and Marianne were friends at Harvard. Now entering their 40s, they remain friends and have to navigate a new part of their life. Between romantic entanglements, bonds of friendship, and new complicated relationships, the friends from college need to figure out if they can remain friends.

Meanwhile, they navigate the world of nostalgia and deal with everything and anything life throws. There are job problems, living situations, and much more in this comedy series.

Why it was canceled: The main reason for cancellation was the lack of viewers for the series. That’s easier to understand now that we know the exponential extra costs when a Netflix show moves into a third season.

However, there’s more to this cancellation. Friends from College suffered from poor character development. The core six characters were selfish individuals. That could have worked — it did for You’re the Worst on FX — but the characters never really gained any character development. They didn’t learn from mistakes or change in their ways, making them unlikable and unrelatable to others.

The second season was certainly viewed as better than the first for many fans, but it was too little too late.

Reaction to the cancellation: There are certainly fans upset and disappointed with the news. That’s the case with any show cancellation on Netflix or elsewhere. However, there hasn’t been the huge outcry that many other TV shows have received over the years. There is a petition but it’s slowed down considerably recently.
