Netflix is home to all sorts of episodic content, whether its straightforward drama or comedy series, reality shows, documentary series, and what have you. But one kind of series that isn’t as prominent anymore, given our hunger for more and more seasons, is the miniseries. While there are surely plenty on cable television, like HBO’s Sharp Objects, there isn’t a mass of miniseries on streaming platforms. This May, director Ava DuVernay brings When They See Us, a can’t-miss miniseries based on a true story.

Based on the 1989 Central Park jogger case, When They See Us chronicles the case of five teenaged boys of color who were convicted of raping a white woman, a crime they did not commit. Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana, and Korey Wise were dubbed the Central Park Five as the case made national headlines. The series begins with their first questioning in 1989 and spans 25 years, including their exoneration in 2002 and settlement in 2014.

When They See Us comes from Academy Award-nominated and Emmy-winning director Ava DuVernary, who earned praise for films such as Selma and 13th as well as directed Disney’s A Wrinkle in Time. The miniseries features familiar faces in its cast and will surely be in contention for all kinds of awards at the upcoming Golden Globes and Emmys ceremonies. The miniseries counts Oprah Winfrey as an executive producer and will run for four episodes. End your month right with When They See Us when it premieres on the final day of May.
