The Office to stay on Netflix until at least 2021
By Bryce Olin
The Office will stay on Netflix until 2021, at least, but it will probably stay on Netflix even longer than that. It all depends on the streaming wars.
No, The Office is not leaving Netflix right now.
A few days ago, the Wall Street Journal reported NBCUniversal might be pulling The Office to add the hit series to the upcoming NBCUniversal streaming service in 2021.
While The Office might leave Netflix in the future, the show will remain on Netflix until “at least” 2021, according to a tweet from the official Netflix Twitter account.
It’s hilarious we have to keep doing this. Every few months there are rumors The Office is leaving Netflix, and then Netflix has to step in and be like, “no, it’s not.” And, then everything is back to normal for a few months until it happens again.
We shared the tweet from Netflix below.
As Michael Scott might say, it sounds like everybody needs to chill out, smoke some doobies with their brothers and just relax. The Office is not leaving Netflix for a few years at least, and there’s a good chance it will not leave Netflix at all.
And, why is that?
According to The Wall Street Journal report, NBCUniversal is starting their own streaming service, and because they own The Office, it might be a good idea to have The Office available to stream on their streaming service. The idea is that it will bring subscribers, and it might bring a few, but I don’t think it’s as big of a game-changer as some might think.
I think more people would buy The Office series on Blu-ray before they would sign up for NBCUniversal. It’d actually be a lot cheaper, although changing discs every time you want to watch something is no fun.
NBCUniversal can probably make more from Netflix every year than they would if people were watching The Office on their streaming service. I don’t have any facts or figures, but Netflix paid $100 million to keep Friends for a year. I think they’d happily write a big check to keep the series for a few more years.
With all of these new streaming services, not all of them will survive, and it’s going to be tough for NBCUniversal to be competitive in a space that already includes Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu, which NBC owns part of, and the upcoming Disney streaming service. Throw in the Apple streaming service, and space is getting pretty crowded.
We’ll be sure to let you know more about the future of the show on Netflix. For now, you have nothing to worry about. You may go forth and watch the series on Netflix in peace.
