The Academy Award-winning film Moonlight is heading to Netflix in May. Barry Jenkins’ second feature film will release to Netflix on May 21.

If you still haven’t seen Moonlight, we have some great news to share with you. Moonlight is coming to Netflix in May 2019.

The streaming network just announced the full list of new movies and shows coming to Netflix in May, and Moonlight was on the list. The A24 film is scheduled to be released on Netflix on May 21.

Netflix confirmed the news via the Strong Black Lead Twitter account:

A24 is responsible for some of the most memorable and cinematic films of the past few years. Starting with a cult classic in Spring Breakers and hitting most recently with last years horror masterpiece Hereditary, A24 is one of the top companies in the business today.

Moonlight was the highest-grossing A24 film of all-time until it was overtaken by Lady Bird and then the aforementioned Hereditary. The Jenkins project made splashes in the awards season race and came out as a top contender for that year’s Best Picture award at the Oscars.

A Quick Recap

The film tells the story of a man in three different times of his life. Chiron, played by Alex Hibbert as a child, Ashton Sanders as a teenager, and Trevante Rhodes as an adult, is raised in a drug affected neighborhood with an abusive mother and is the victim of relentless bullying. These actions in his childhood lead to more questions about who he is and what is his path in life. He finds guidance shortly from a drug dealer named Juan (Mahershala Ali), who acts as a father figure in the first chapter.

Chiron begins to question his sexuality which leads to more bullying and shame put upon him. His best friend Kevan (Andre Holland) is apart of his journey through sexuality and also betrayal. He is eventually sent to jail for an attack on a school bully.

Years later, the story picks up with an adult Chiron who has begun selling drugs in a neighborhood as Juan did. An eventual meetup between him and Kevan looms and he begins to question his path once more.

This emotional film wowed audiences with its crisp editing and cinematography. Not to mention the excellent performances given by every person involved. At the 89th Academy Awards, Moonlight was nominated for eight awards including historic nominations for Joi McMillon as she was the first black woman nominated for an editing Oscar. Also, Ali was the first Muslim to win an Acting Oscar. This was the first all-black cast to win Best Picture as well. Moonlight totaled three awards that night, Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Best Picture Blunder

Of course, one of the memorable moments from that Oscars award show was the announcement of La La Land as the winner for Best Picture. The wrong envelope was handed to the presenters. This was quickly rectified by the La La Land crew and Barry Jenkins and company had their moment in the limelight.

Be sure to check out Moonlight on Netflix starting May 21st.
