The most recent episode of NBC’s The Enemy Within ended with disgraced FBI Agent Erica Shepherd making a call to Mikael Tal. Does this mean she’s actually become a traitor?

There’s been some doubt regarding where Erica Shepherd’s loyalties truly lie on NBC’s The Enemy Withinand for good reason. Shepherd has used every opportunity to get the things she needs—even if those priorities don’t line up with Agent Keaton’s (Morris Chestnut) mission.

Warning! Spoilers for the latest episodes of NBC’s The Enemy Within follow.

In “The Offer”, Shepherd took a major step toward cementing herself as one of Tal’s top operatives. She made a private call to the terrorist leader in an effort to accept the proposal he made her before. Tal asks why the sudden change of heart and Shepherd emphatically responds that she doesn’t want to die in a cage.

While we don’t know what Shepherd’s motivations are, perhaps she’s had enough. Shepherd has put up with the FBI’s slow search for Tal because of her daughter, but if they can’t actually bring him down, there’s no point in her staying on the team.

For that reason alone, Shepherd could feasibly be switching sides. She’ll have to work out a convenient solution with Tal on recovering Hanna but the task should be a small one for the egomaniacal terrorist. Once Hanna is out of the way, Shepherd and Tal could cause some serious damage to the country.

On the other hand, Shepherd could be using this request as an infiltration tactic. Perhaps she understands that the only way she’ll be able to bring Tal down is from the inside. The question is: how far undercover will Shepherd have to go?

Assuming she is playing a long game here, Shepherd will have to convince Agent Keaton that she’s truly working with him. If Keaton even senses that Shepherd is being dishonest, he won’t allow her to compromise his mission. That being said, they have a major task ahead of them if it includes tricking Tal into revealing himself.
