Louisiana: American Horror Story: Coven

While Louisiana has been the setting for countless memorable movies (great titles like The Waterboy, 12 Years a Slave and The Green Mile quickly come to mind), it’s not the setting of quite as many television shows. Thankfully, there is one standout series that makes us fall in love with all the creepy, shadowy corners of the Bayou State: American Horror Story’s Coven season is set there!

Each season of AHS is different from the last, with the setting constantly changing. The show covers everything from freak shows to asylum living. Arguably its best season, though, was Coven.

Coven took viewers to New Orleans, where a school of witches practiced their craft. The season was so popular that many of its characters and storylines were revived for the most recent iteration of the series, Apocalypse.

Coven put a spotlight on Louisiana’s rich history of voodoo. Sure, it often exaggerated the craft, but it was fascinating nonetheless. The whole season really just made us want to book a haunted tour of New Orleans as fast as we could!

Honorable Mention for Louisiana has to go to the great Syfy series The Magicians. While this series wasn’t set in Louisiana, it certainly draws heavy inspiration from the state’s magical history and the pilot was famously filmed in New Orleans.
