WASHINGTON, DC – FEBRUARY 23: With a painting of former President Theodore Roosevelt on horseback behind them, Defense Secretary Ashton Carter (R) joins President Barack Obama as he makes a statement about his plan to close the detention camp at the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base and relocate the terrorism suspects there to the United States in the Roosevelt Room at the White House February 23, 2016 in Washington, DC. North Dakota: The Roosevelts: An Intimate History

Unfortunately for The Peace Garden State, this area doesn’t exactly get a lot of representation on TV or in movies. Easily the most recognizable show that takes inspiration from North Dakota is Fargo, which doesn’t actually focus much on the state at all (plus, it isn’t available on Netflix anyway).

With all that in mind, we look to one of North Dakota’s unofficial nickname as a way to find a great show to represent it. The state is occasionally called “Roughrider Country,” a reference to Theodore Roosevelt’s Roughriders of the Spanish-American War. The state actually has a long history with Teddy Roosevelt; this president moved to North Dakota for his retirement, where he built a ranch named Elkhorn.

Netflix currently has a great little docuseries all about the Roosevelt political family. While The Roosevelts: An Intimate History also spends time focusing on Eleanor and Franklin D. Roosevelt, it spends a hefty amount of time exploring the life of Theodore.

This series isn’t quite as thrilling or dramatic as other shows on this list. Nevertheless, it’s perfect for those who love a deep dive into history. PBS made it, so you know it’s going to be pretty darn thorough. It’s also worth noting that this little series picked up a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Narrator (Peter Coyote).
