Iowa: Damnation

Unfortunately for The Hawkeye State, there just aren’t too many TV shows set here or focusing on the state’s culture or its famous residents. The Netflix crime drama hit Mindhunter depicts a very brief engagement in Iowa, but it really isn’t enough to adequately represent the state.

Thankfully, there’s a short-lived show on Netflix called Damnation that might just do the trick. If you’ve never heard of this low-key series, that’s probably because it originally ran on USA Network for only one season back in 2017.

The show is perfect to represent Iowa thanks to its dedication to period details. Set in 1931 against the backdrop of the Great Depression, Damnation centers on a man who poses as a preacher in Iowa in order to mount a strike.

Reviews for Damnation were definitely mixed, which is probably a big part of why it was canceled early. That being said, it’s still an interesting little period piece that should work out well for fans of Western-esque dramas. It’s actually been compared to Netflix’s original drama Godless, which was a big crowd favorite. Check out Damnation for yourself sometime soon and see if it gives Iowa a good name and good representation!
