California: BoJack Horseman

California is one of those states that play host to about a million great TV shows. Netflix has countless offerings that feature The Golden State, each offering their own unique perspective on West Coast living. Some of the great Honorable Mentions for Cali include One Day at a Time, Fuller House and Grace and Frankie.

While each of these shows has its merits, one Netflix original is the California jackpot: BoJack Horseman. This animated series skewers our perceptions of Hollywood living.

The show follows the titular BoJack Horseman, a fading actor who has turned to alcoholism to fill the empty void in his life. After hiring a writer to help him write his autobiography, his life takes a turn for some new adventures. Unfortunately, old habits still haunt him and BoJack struggles to reconcile who he once was with who he could be.

This show. Is. Intense. It’s near-universally acclaimed and for good reason. While it may initially feel like a goofy, light-hearted comedy, BoJack ends up satirizing Hollywood and the rest of California in a very real, very dark manner. It deals with depression, addiction and the human tendency to self-destruct.

If you’re looking for a bubblegum portrayal of West Coast living, look elsewhere. Still, for those looking to deep dive into some very real problems in American culture, BoJack Horseman might be just the show for you.
