Pennsylvania: The Office

Pennsylvania is home to a lot of great television. This is probably due, in part, to the state’s large number of major cities, like Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. Megahit dramas like Pretty Little Liars and How to Get Away with Murder are both set in the Keystone State.

Ironically, the very best show to come out of Pennsylvania isn’t actually set in one of the major metropolitan areas. It’s The Office, the classic NBC comedy which takes place in Scranton.

If you’ve never seen The Office (shame on you!), then go in expecting hyper-realism. The series takes place at a regular, humdrum paper company where business is on the decline. Leading the office is off-kilter boss Michael Scott, a regional manager who favors friendships over the business and will do anything to get a laugh. The premise is dry, but the hilarity is unreal.

Since The Office places such a heavy emphasis on realism, it figures that Pennsylvania is given no special treatment here. The show takes us to several different corners of Scranton, seemingly each more normal than the last. Residents of actual Pennsylvania may find themselves feeling like the quiet cadences of their real lives have somehow been transplanted to the small screen.
