Wyoming: Longmire

The Equality State doesn’t get a ton of representation on television, but what it does have out there is gold. Dedicated fans of modern Westerns will instantly recall that the hit crime drama Longmire was set in Absaroka County, Wyoming.

Longmire is named for the titular Sheriff Walt Longmire, a recent widower and exactly the kind of stereotypical introspective and clever hero you’d imagine to lead a Western story. Together with his friend Henry Standing Bear, he tackles local crime and demonstrates quite the knack for intuitively knowing the truth of a situation.

Longmire is over now, but not forgotten. It ran for 3 seasons on A&E, where it was the network’s highest rated original drama series. After cancellation, Netflix picked up the series and it ran for 3 more seasons. You can catch all of them available for viewing on the streaming service now.

Like any good Western before it, Longmire is, in part, a love letter to the state it’s set in. In fact, Wyoming is a major part of what makes the show successful, as this setting helps to differentiate Longmire from other popular crime dramas. Critics, especially, seemed to love its unique feel: The Wall Street Journal once called its backdrop the “glorious setting under the big sky of Wyoming.”
