Vermont: Black Mirror: Bandersnatch

Who can forget growing up with the Choose Your Own Adventure books? They were a staple of American childhood in the 80s and 90s. Obviously, Netflix realized that we’re all living in the age of Millennial nostalgia because the streaming service gave us the highly acclaimed special Black Mirror: Bandersnatch earlier this year.

Bandersnatch was like a television revolution. Its story centered on a young computer programmer and it allowed viewers to make his choices, be they smart or stupid. Whether you enjoyed the plot of Bandersnatch or not, this was clearly a step into “no going back” territory for all of entertainment. The bar for television innovation has been set pretty dang high.

So what’s the Bandersnatch connection to Vermont? Apparently those famous Choose Your Own Adventure books come from a Vermont-based publishing company and the brand was not super happy about Black Mirror’s use of dark and violent themes. Chooseco sought $25 million in damages after the special aired.

So while Vermont and Black Mirror may disagree over Bandersnatch, there’s no denying that The Green Mountain State had a heavy influence over this incredible innovation. Choose Your Own Adventure set something really amazing in motion and now normal TV might just be ruined for us forever.
