Texas: Hap and Leonard

In the mood to check out a hidden gem? Give Hap and Leonard a shot.

This series comes to Netflix courtesy of SundanceTV, so you probably haven’t heard much about it. The story centers on titular Hap Collins and Leonard Pine, two mismatched best buds who get into criminal trouble together in 1980s East Texas. This show has got crime; it’s got drama and it’s got an incredibly unique offbeat sense of humor. It’s all kinds of weird and wonderful.

While Hap and Leonard may not have been the most popular show on TV for mainstream audiences, it was still very highly reviewed. Critics doled out a ton of praise for the character work. Hap and Leonard surprisingly starred some really big celebrities like James Purefoy (The Following), Michael Kenneth Williams (The Wire), Jimmy Simpson (Westworld) and Christina Hendricks (Mad Men). Can’t beat that casting.

The show was canceled after its third season back in 2018. Lucky for you, all three installments are currently available for viewing on Netflix. This means you can get your Texas-themed binge on and successfully complete the whole story in no time. Give Hap and Leonard a shot this weekend.

Still in the mood for more Texas TV? This state’s runner-up pick goes to Halt and Catch Fire, another hidden gem. This series focuses on the popularization of the personal computer.
