Missouri: Ozark

For a while there, I wouldn’t have thought “Missouri” when I pictured the setting for a great TV drama. Those types of series always seem to be reserved for the inner city, taking place in New York or Chicago.

Thankfully, Ozark definitely changed my mind. As the name would imply, this dark, moody drama takes place right on the waterfront in heavily wooded Missouri. Its story follows Marty Byrde, a financial advisor who gets into serious trouble after his business partner crosses the cartel. In an effort to save his family and make some fast cash, Marty moves the wife and kids out to the Ozarks to start a new life and a new laundering scheme.

Now, don’t get me wrong: Ozark certainly doesn’t make Missouri look fun. The show is shot in all blues and grays, frequently making the setting look downright depressing. It also heavily showcases redneck living, with a specific storyline that follows the daughter of a known criminal.

Still, you can’t help but feel fascinated when you watch. The series really plugs you in, making you want to go see the waterfront for yourself. Maybe you wouldn’t want to put down roots next door to the Byrde family, but you’d certainly like to see their crimes in person.
