Oklahoma: The Innocent Man

Oh man, we live for a good docuseries. It’s the age of true crime and Netflix definitely has not disappointed us. There are some great binge-watches on the streaming service like The Keepers, The Staircase and The Ted Bundy Tapes, but one series you may have missed is The Innocent Man.

This series is a documentary adaptation of one of famous author John Grisham’s books. Grisham himself stars in the piece, taking viewers on an intimate journey through the harrowing stories of two different murder cases that may have involved false confessions. It’s very similar in concept to another of Netflix’s megahits, Making a Murderer. The story here is so crazy that Grisham has commented that if he had written up the true events as one of his fiction novels, readers probably “wouldn’t have believed it.”

So what’s The Innocent Man’s link to Oklahoma? The murders it examines took place in Ada, OK between 1982 and 1984. Like so many of the other Netflix shows on this list, The Innocent Man may not put the state it represents in the best light, but, dang, will it suck you in. Viewers get an in-depth look at real life in 1980s Ada.
